The Cardwell Art Prize 2008 Art, History & a balmy evening in beautiful Cardwell by the Sea What a great
evening; the opening night of the inaugural Cardwell Art Prize 2008, held on Wednesday evening June 4th, was attended by about 150 people at the new Cardwell Library. The night was a tremendous
success, showcasing some of the best art & craft works of our region; great food, wine, art and the good people of Cardwell and surrounding districts. The occasion was planned prior to the local council
elections and the amalgamation of Cardwell Shire. The exhibition marks the passing of Cardwell Shire's boundaries and celebrates our historic shire, its people, places, history,
happenings, art and life. It was only fitting that such a celebration should take place in Cardwell by the Sea, within the historic precinct where the Cardwell shire began in 1864. The exhibition was
opened by the very last mayor of Cardwell Shire, Mr. Joe Galeano, and this process and celebration closes a chapter of our history The eclectic mix of media, style and craft, make this an
exhibition that has something for everyone with stunning paintings, sculpture, pottery, textile, jewellery, fine art marquetry, glass and much, much more. You really do need to see it to appreciate the depth
of artistic talent in this region. There is also an incredibly imaginative and diverse range of works by youth artists; most works in the exhibition are for sale at very reasonable prices.
Exhibition adjudicator, Rochelle Rodier B.Sc.Dip.Ed., textile artist and local business woman was assisted by Lee Porter in the very difficult task of selecting winners for the 7 categories, highly commended
works and the overall exhibition winner. During the selection process only the artworks and details of the medium used are made available to the judge to ensure that works are chosen on merit alone.
This was certainly a very difficult task, with 104 entries from which to choose. |
